Rules of the library

Readers shall be responsible for any damage to the book used by them in the library and shall replace any such books or any other library property for which  damage or injury caused by them , they should pay the value thereof. 

No book shall be issued which in the opinion of the librarian is not in sufficiently good condition to be safely handled by the borrower. 

Cases of failure in the service or incivility on the part of library staff should be immediately reported to the officer personally in charge of library at the time.   

Umbrellas, Handbags, printed books not belonging to the library and any other articles to which the officer personally in charge of the library  at the time may object, must be left at the door. Smoking and spitting are strictly prohibited. Pet animals will not be admitted. 

No member of the staff is permitted to receive gratuity of any kind. 

RULES FOR LOANS TO PERSONS RESIDENT IN THE CITY OF MADRAS AND ITS IMMEDIATE VICINITY 

Any person of seventeen years of age or upwards , resident with in the limits of the city of Chennai or in such places in the its immediate vicinity as may be approved by the librarian may be permitted after depositing Rs.100/200/300 to borrow not more than Two/Four/Six books for a period not exceeding two weeks from the date of issue.        

Annual subscription of Rs.50 is collected from each  member.

A week’s notice must be given before a deposit is withdrawn. No deposit will be repaid until all books out standing against the depositor and all his borrowers tickets have been duly returned. 

Depositors may not sublend the books of the library. 

Periodicals, works of reference such as dictionaries and maps, works which may be difficult to replace and such other works as may from time to time  be classed with them for the purposes of this rule shall not be lent out.

Books which are temporarily in special demand may be lent for such shorter period as many be necessary or may be temporarily declared reference works   may at any time be terminated by order of the librarian. 

If a book is not returned when due a fine of  two rupees per week per volume shall be levied.

Books may be renewed for a period of one fortnight provided;

a.The renewal application reaches the librarian three clear days before the date on which the books are due; 

b.No other reader has applied for the books in the mean time; and 

c.Not more than three consecutive renewals are allowed for the book with out its production in the library for inspection. 

In  case condition (b) is not satisfied the librarian shall cause a letter to that effect to be posted to the borrower concerned and the books must be returned on the due date.

The librarian may refuse any application for the privilege of borrowing books without assigning any reason therefore.

 The librarian in consultation with his assistant may grant special loans on such conditions as he may prescribe.
